What does it mean when we refer to treatment as being "holistic"? How does it work and who can benefit?

What is Holistic Therapy?

The term holistic has become something of a buzzword over the last few years. Its definition is actually rather straightforward: a holistic approach to therapy takes into account all aspects of a person’s health. Our physical, mental, and social lives are all intertwined, so it’s natural to address each of these components when taking a holistic approach.

Addiction, depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns are all incredibly complex. A person suffering from generalized anxiety disorder, for instance, might feel that anxiety in their body. Hunched shoulders, clenched teeth, and tight muscles are all common in people with anxiety. By taking a holistic approach to treatment, an anxious person can see relief in both body and mind.

How Holistic Therapy Works

Holistic therapy may include several different techniques to address mind, body and spiritual healing. Generally, clients spend holistic therapy sessions working on self-awareness and coming to understand things that work for them – and the things that don’t. A holistic approach to therapy helps people understand how to identify their needs and how to meet them without hurting themselves or others.

Many times, holistic therapy is centered around mindfulness. This may take the form of meditation, reflection, journaling, yoga, and learning little tricks to help you stay in the moment. By being totally present, we can heal from our pasts and make a better future for ourselves.

Who Can Benefit from Holistic Therapy?

Holistic therapy is effective in treating anxiety disorders, stress-related concerns, major depressive disorder, and trauma-related disorders like sexual assault and PTSD. By balancing all the different aspects of a person’s life, they can begin to truly heal.

Even those without serious trauma in their past can benefit from holistic therapy. The holistic approach can be incredibly effective in improving your overall health. By striving for wholeness and healthy living, a person can regain proper balance in all areas of their life.
